Here's a simple concept: If you don't like Esperanto, you don't have to speak it. But despite that simple fact, there are those who have what I call in irrational hatred for Esperanto. Why is that?

I'm of the mind that there are things that are much more worthy of condemnation that Esperanto. Like how about international terrorism? And I can't say it enough times: If you don't like Esperanto, you don't have to speak it! Let the rest of us slobs who appreciate it speak it and promote it. Anti-Esperanto folks love to talk about how "unpopular" it is. As if being unpopular makes something bad. Well, in the free nations of the world, people should have the right to practice unpopular ideas. It's not going to hurt anybody. Like I said before, Esperanto is nowhere near as bad as terrorism. Besides, Esperanto is like stamp collecting. Stamp collecting may not be popular, but it's not something worthy of high condemnation like terrorism!

Anti-Esperanto folks also like to say that Esperanto is dead. But in order for something to be dead, it has to be 100 percent dead. Not 99.9 percent or 99.999 percent. I mean, if there are at least two million Esperanto speakers worldwide as well as thousands of books and web sites written in the language, then how can Esperanto be dead? The only way it could be dead is if all Esperantists were dead and all written records of the language were completely destroyed. Yup! After all that, Esperanto would be dead.

"But Esperanto's unpopular! You can't do something that unpopular!" Oh yes I can, you fart-hole! Because freedom of choice gives me the right to do unpopular things. And if you haven't heard me the first couple of million times, if you like Esperanto, you don't have to speak it!!!

Another pop cultural Esperanto reference

Over the weekend, I saw an episode of the Nickelodeon animated series Danny Phantom where they made a notable reference to Esperanto. In the episode, main character Danny Fenton encounters a werewolf ghost who speaks Esperanto. If I can get a new VCR by the time that episode is rebroadcast, I'll definitely tape it.

Make a Comeback?

In the 1860-70s, Baha'u'llah (prophet founder of the Baha'i Faith) called for the adoption of a universal auxilliary language (UAL). In the early 20th century, therefore, many of Esperanto's strongest supporters were Baha'is. One reason Esperanto seems like the best choice for a UAL is because it is a-political. However, in the last half of the 20th Century the movement seems to have lost steam, for some reason.
The question is: do you think Esperanto could still make a comeback, and someday replace English as the UAL (personally, i hope so-- or if not Esperanto, then a similar "artificial" language).

Help with transating word?

Can anyone give me a translation for the word "destination", meaning a place or places to which one departs? For whatever reason, neither my English<->Esperanto dictionary, nor the on-line dictionary have that word.

Esperanto is good for the creative process.

I've been an Esperantist since 1994 (though I'm way out of practice these days), and I've been publishing my own small press comics for a little longer than that. According to my view of things, the basic definition of creativity is the act of being different. With Esperanto currently being as obscure and unknown as it is, doing Esperanto comics is definitely something different. Now I know I'm not the first to do Esperanto comics. But I do know that if I want to do a comic that's radically different from most, I can do it in Esperanto (or more likely do it in English and Esperanto). Thus, Esperanto is good for the creative process.

Recently, I did a bilingual 24-hour comic. Needless to say, any slob can slap together a comic book in 24 hours. But very few can do it in English and Esperanto. Yup! And again I say Esperanto is good for the creative process.

translation help

hello, I'm working on a new tattoo that will be a part of a collection of words, phrases and quotes in different languages. I am fairly versed in esperanto but wanted to double-check my translation before I put it on my body ;) It's the quote for my birth date.

"The sun brings both life and death."

"La suno alportas ambaux vivon kaj morton"

so, I can't figure it out, what part of speech is ambaux? It doesn't end with a standard letter, yet I couldn't find it in the preposition list and "both" fits in pretty much every part of speech in english. I would really like to drop the objective -n on "vivo" and "morto". If anyone has any sentence structure improvement suggestions I welcome that too.

Female Esperantist in Bay Area needed for recording project

Well--that has to be one of the stranger subject lines that I can ever recall posting!

But it's true--I am looking for a woman who speaks Esperanto fairly comfortably, and who has a "musical" voice, for a small recording project. It's not for actually singing, and it's not very difficult or long, but it's too complex to explain here in full. In short, it's for an art project and her involvement will consist of speaking ten short phrases in Esperanto into a microphone, which will eventually be broadcast on the radio as part of a larger art project.

I have a certain vocal sound in mind, so I can't guarantee that whoever I meet first will end up being the voice I use, but I need to start somewhere. Also, I can't afford to pay for her involvement, but if you know someone in the San Francisco area who might find such a project fun and would have a few hours free sometime in the next couple of months to make this recording, please pass on the information or put her in touch with me.

lyric translation challenge

backing vocals in one song; the text to be derived from the
main lyric, which is written in English by a Russian guy
(thus the funky grammar).

If one of you can provide a translation to which the others agree,
